Successful Students Inside Albany Conference Concluded on Wednesday, May 23

The 2018 Students Inside Albany Conference concluded on Wednesday. There were 59 students from across the state in Albany who participated from Sunday to Wednesday.  Local students representing our local League were Sophia Cetina, a junior at Rye High School, and Peter Manos, a sophomore at Port Chester High School.  “This was the best group of students we’ve had since I’ve been leading the program – thanks for selecting such great, interested students. They were all engaged, well-behaved and fun to be with,” said Laura Ladd Bierman, Executive Director, LWV New York State.

This year’s conference was not our usual program because of the schedule of the legislature. The students weren’t able to shadow their Assemblymembers, but almost all at least met them and saw the Assembly in session. They did meet with their Senators and then were able to watch an historic event. There was a joint session (Assembly and Senate) on Tuesday to appoint the new Attorney General. A joint session is a very rare occurrence and the students were on the floor or in the gallery watching. Many even got photos with the new AG Barbara Underwood.
